Description
This magnificent piece of architecture was built in honor of the first king of unified Italy,Victor Emmanuel II, in 1861. In 1885 construction of the monument after a design by Giuseppi Sacconi won an architectural contest. The northern slope of the Capitoline Hill was cleared to make way for the construction of the monument. Sacconi did not live to see his monument completed because he died in 1905. Three architects were commissioned to complete his work and the monument was finished in 1911. Tourist and locals have used this nickname " wedding cake" to identify the beautiful building located in the Piazza Venezia in Rome.
