Description
The beautifully constructed building, Parliament, on the banks of the River Danube in Budapest is an amazing piece of architecture with its many windows and spires. This building was one of the most beautiful structures that I saw during my travels to Eastern Europe. This neo-Gothic structure which also has a touch of Renaissance and Baroque characteristics is over 100 years old. The design for the Parliament building was decided upon by an open tender process. The construction from the winning plan began in 1885 and the inauguration of the building took place in 1896 the 1000th anniversary of Hungary but was not completed until 1902. Two of the runner up designs were buildings constructed facing the Parliament: Museum of Ethnography and the Ministry of Agriculture. The Budapest Parliament building is the third largest in the world having 691 rooms and is 315 ft tall and 12.5 miles of stairs. It is the same height as St. Stephen's Basilica in Budapest.
