Description
The Mount Washington Hotel is a Y shaped Spanish Renaissance architectural design with a touch of the Colonial Revival of New York architect Charles Alling Gifford.Approximately 250 Italian craftsmen including stonecutters and artisans in stained glass and plasterwork were brought in to work on the project which took less than two years to complete. The hotel stands 114 feet tall from the foundation to the tops of the five story towers and the veranda which extends around the hotel is approximately 900 feet long. It is still the longest wooden structure in New England. In 1986 the hotel was designated as a National Historic Landmark.
Located in the heart of the White Mountains the Mount Washington has seen its share of extreme weather conditions throughout all four seasons. This particular August day was filled with threatening storm clouds, and this visiting photographer was treated with the amazing shadows and light that these storm clouds presented.
